HPAT 2026 Update: New Timed Break Between Sections

HPAT 2026 Update: New Timed Break Between Sections

3 hours ago by Chris

ACER has introduced an important update to the HPAT testing platform that all candidates should be aware of before sitting their exam. Here's everything you need to know about the new timed break policy and how to prepare for it.

Background: HPAT's Evolution to Online Testing

HPAT moved from in-person to an online testing format following the COVID pandemic, with the first online administration taking place in 2021. Since then, ACER has made several changes to improve the testing platform, including the introduction of a bookmarking feature that lets you flag questions to return to later. The timed break between sections is the most recent change.

What's Changed?

ACER has introduced a 1-minute timed break between each section. That is, you will have a timed break between sections 1 and 2, and sections 2 and 3.

According to ACER's HPAT testing guidelines:

"Once the test timer for Sections 1 and 2 ends, a 1-minute countdown will begin, after which the next section will automatically start."

Previously, there was no timed break between sections. Instead, candidates simply needed to click on a button to proceed to the next section. This meant that there were no clear guidelines as to how long students could spend between sections. ACER has now introduced a standard 1 minute break time to ensure consistency across candidate testing.

Importantly, bathroom breaks are not permitted between sections. If you need to use the bathroom, you must do so during the testing time for Sections 1, 2, or 3. Given HPAT is highly time-pressured, we do not recommend taking a bathroom break unless absolutely necessary. Avoid drinking too much fluid or caffeine before your test, and ensure you visit  the bathroom before starting your test.

What Stays the Same?

HPAT will run the same way as in previous years in all other respects. The content, structure, and timing of individual sections remain unchanged. The scoring methodology also remains the same for HPAT 2026, however there will be changes to medical entry in Ireland from 2027 that will affect HPAT scoring and Leaving Certificate requirements.

MedEntry's Platform Updated

MedEntry's testing platform has been updated to include the new 1-minute timed break between sections. When you practice with MedEntry, you'll experience the same timing and transitions as your live HPAT. The MedEntry platform exactly replicates the ACER testing platform, so there will be no surprises on test day.

Note that HPAT registrations and bookings for 2026 are now open. If you're planning to sit HPAT in 2026, register as soon as possible to secure your preferred test date and location. Good luck with your preparation!
