HPAT 2021: What You Need to Know

1 year ago by Philippa

Registrations to sit HPAT 2021 are now open. You can register to sit HPAT 2021 on the ACER website: https://hpat-ireland.acer.org/register

We recommend that students register to sit HPAT as soon as possible.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the first time ever, HPAT will take place online, via remote proctoring. We understand that this may be a stressful and confusing time for HPAT 2021 candidates. This blog outlines what you need to know.

HPAT 2021 will take place on 20-21 February

HPAT normally takes place on the last or second last Saturday morning in February. In 2021, HPAT will take place over two days: Saturday 20th February and Sunday 21st February. When you register to sit HPAT 2021, you will be able to choose which day you prefer to sit the test.

ACER will provide all registered candidates with further information on booking a HPAT 2021 test session in the coming weeks.

HPAT 2021 will be conducted via ‘online proctoring’

HPAT normally takes place in pencil and paper based format. In 2021, HPAT will be conducted online, via remote proctoring.

This means that HPAT 2021 candidates will need to use a computer with an internet connection in order to sit the test. Candidates will be supervised by a ‘proctor’ who will assist with the registration / check in process and supervise the test.

If anything goes wrong during HPAT 2021, candidates should report the issue immediately to the proctor at the time of the test session, and also in writing to the HPAT-Ireland office immediately after the test session.

HPAT 2021 candidates will need to provide a suitable testing environment

Candidates will need to provide the following in order to sit HPAT 2021:

  • Desktop computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone (tablets and mobile phones are not suitable)
  • Internet speed of at least 2 Mbps download/upload
  • Preferably a wired keyboard and wired mouse
  • Private, quiet space with a suitable desk/chair and clear workspace
  • Mirror or other reflective device (to show the proctor the testing environment)
  • Pencil, sharpener, eraser and scratch paper

The following items are not permitted:

  • Dual screens/monitors
  • Mobile phones, digital/analogue/smart watches
  • Hats (unless for religious reasons)
  • Food (unless required for medical reasons)
  • Calculators, dictionaries, highlighters, rulers, earplugs

HPAT 2021 candidates will be able to use scratch paper

Normally, scratch paper is not allowed in HPAT, and candidates need to make notes in the HPAT test booklet. For HPAT 2021, candidates will be permitted to have two sheets of blank A4 sized paper for their rough working.

Before the HPAT 2021 session starts, candidates will be required to show both sides of the paper to the supervisor. After the HPAT 2021 testing session, the supervisor will ask candidates to show their rough work to the webcam, and then will be required to dispose of the paper by ripping it up.

A timer will be available in HPAT 2021

Normally, HPAT candidates are allowed to bring in an analogue watch to time themselves for the HPAT. For HPAT 2021, the testing platform will have an inbuilt timer.

HPAT 2021 will cost €152.80

The usual cost for sitting HPAT is €140. There has been a slight increase in the fee for HPAT 2021, given the new manner of administration.

A final word

We understand that the changes to the format of HPAT 2021 may be a cause for stress. However, it is important to note that all HPAT 2021 candidates are facing the same challenges. Furthermore, MedEntry students are already well prepared for online testing, as MedEntry’s HPAT practice exams are provided on an online platform. Therefore, MedEntry students will be at a significant advantage over other HPAT 2021 candidates.
